What You Need To Know About The New USA-Canada Border Deal
There is so much focus on the southern border that many people forget all about the northern border. But our border with Canada is starting to play an increasingly central role in the immigration debate – and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why. The border is the longest shared international border on the planet, spanning almost 9,000 kilometers. Such a distance is almost impossible to police and patrol effectively – and this is something some migrants are starting to take advantage of. When you consider the issues at the southern border, no one should be surprised to learn that people are starting to fly to Canada in an attempt to enter through the north instead. Recent changes to USA-Canada border policies highlight these issues. But what do you need to know about this new deal? Let’s find out:
Canada Now Turns Migrants Back
As of March 2023, the so-called “loophole” that allowed migrants to enter the United States through the northern border is closed. Canada now has the authority to turn migrants back at popular points of entry like Roxham Road. To highlight these changes, Canada has put up a large sign at Roxham Road warning migrants that they will be turned back. Previously, Canada’s unwritten rule was to turn a blind eye to some of these migrants. The rule is simple: Asylum seekers must make their asylum claims at the first safe country they reach – whether that’s Canada, Mexico, or any other nation between their home and their desired final destination in the United States.
Of course, migrants also come to Canada in the opposite direction – leaving the United States for greener (albeit colder) pastures in the True North. Sometimes, they do this because they know they will be deported if they stay in the United States. Canada has already started deporting these people back to the United States, and there are reports of migrants being flown from the northern border to Texas for processing.
Criticisms of the New Deal
Some say that this new system is dangerous and harmful for migrants. Some say that if this law had been in place a few years ago, they would have never made it to Canada in the first place. It goes without saying that changes to immigration law are always controversial – whether they offend border security advocates or those fighting for the rights of migrants.
