US Government Makes Notable Changes to Immigration Before Elections

Immig14

Immigration is a key issue as we approach the US elections – and some might argue that it is the key issue that will determine the next president. The elections are fast approaching, and the current administration is taking the opportunity to make several changes to immigration law. Depending on your circumstances, some of these changes could present various opportunities. To learn more about how these changes might benefit you, consider a consultation with an experienced immigration lawyer in Palm Beach County.

Legal Status for Spouses of U.S. Citizens: A Key Issue

The Biden administration has been trying to give legal status to spouses of U.S. citizens for some time, but the government is facing opposition from federal judges. In August of 2024, a judge in Texas temporarily blocked the Biden administration from making this change. Various Republican states have also challenged this new policy, but it is not clear which side will win this legal battle.

The planned changes would allow undocumented migrants to get work permits while avoiding deportation. To enjoy these benefits, the migrants would have had to prove that they legally married U.S. citizens and lived in the country for at least 10 years. Background checks were another requirement.

Biden Revives Controversial Immigration Program

At around the same time, the Biden administration revived an immigration program that had previously been paused due to concerns about what NBC calls “mass fraud.” The program is relatively simple, and it allows migrants to apply for entry into the States from their home nations. This program specifically applies to migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

This program depends on “sponsors” in the United States – people who vouch for the migrants and promise to financially support them once they arrive. This process caused concerns when investigative reporters found that many sponsors were using the same address. For example, 600 applications used the same address – a random warehouse in Orlando. Regardless of these concerns, some migrants may benefit from a short window of opportunity thanks to the revival of this program.

The next few weeks could be crucial for many migrants hoping to enter the United States. Due to the looming election, it makes sense to get started with an immigration lawyer as soon as possible.
